The Debt

Movie: The Debt (2015). Stephen Dorff and David Strathairn star in this tale about imperial opportunism, familial love, and patriotic loyalty.

The DebtThe drama is set against the backdrop of an international finance deal in Peru; a deal with profound social implications for six people split between three groups: a father and son (indigenous farmers), wealthy American businessmen (best friends), and a local nurse and her ailing mother.

The guiding force of the story is Oliver Campbell, played by Stephen Dorff. Oliver is ready to put people out of work and move them off their land as he manipulates his way to a huge pay-day. Similar to movies such as Crash, the three different groups, and their individual stories, are slowly woven together as the movie progresses.

While the movie has some shortcomings and it isn’t too difficult to tell where the story is headed, it does provide an interesting look at how our actions have consequences, not only for ourselves, but for others as well. An added bonus is the stunning cinematography, showcasing the beautiful Peruvian highlands.
