Start Your Day the Right Way

In a recent post, The Benefits of Lemon Water, I noted that in addition to providing nutrients such as potassium, vitamin C, and antioxidants, drinking lemon water as soon as you wake up spikes energy levels physically and mentally; and improves the nutrient absorption in your stomach and gives you a steady, natural energy buzz that lasts throughout the day.

Your Actions are Your Destiny

Following a half cup of warm lemon water, the wife and I like to get in a run, or brisk walk, and finish our morning routine with a fresh fruit smoothie and an egg, for a shot of protein. As the sun is rising later and the weather starts to change, it’s become a little too cold to run at 4:45 in the morning, even here in Southeastern Arizona.

Tracking Distance and Calories

During this time of the year we often head to the gym to get in a run on the treadmills. Two miles and a little core work later, we’re back at the house making the smoothies and eggs.

Final Thoughts

While we aren’t always able to follow this exact routine, we do on most mornings, and we find our days flow better when we do.

  1. Life really is one big routine. If you’re in a good routine, GREAT! If your routine is bad, you need to shake off those bad habits and start forming good ones. The crazy thing is a good habit is they’re just as hard to shake off as a bad one once it is instilled! Although with the weather in the UK you won’t be catching me jogging at 4:45am! hahaha

    • “The crazy thing is a good habit is they’re just as hard to shake off as a bad one once it is instilled.” So very true … and since you’re going to have habits, you might as well get stuck with the good ones.

  2. Your dedication is impressive, James. I’ve never been able to motivate myself to work out in the mornings (7:00 am work start time doesn’t help), but yours is proof that it’s the best time of the day for consistency. As for an egg in your smoothie…..not as inspirational!

    • Ha. You misread, my friend. An egg (usually fried), ‘and’ a smoothie. Not ‘in’ my smoothie.

  3. Thanks for sharing this James. I definitely have an easier time getting going in the sunny days of summer. So hearing your strategies for adjustment are actually very helpful. And totally agree, these really are keystone habits that have a big impact on your wellbeing and the benefits really compound over time.
